This is a critical reminder to all schools to proactively communicate with parents about the mandatory submission of the NYC DOE Parental Notice of Intent by June 1, 2025. Please note: there will be no extensions or second opportunities beyond this deadline. Students with IESPs will not receive any special education or related services unless a parent submits a timely PNI form.
Here are some steps schools can take to ensure that parents are in compliance with this mandate.
Practical Steps for Schools:
- Distribute Multiple Reminders
Begin sending both email and printed reminders to all parents who have not yet submitted the PNI form. Each reminder should include clear, step-by-step instructions and a blank PNI form for their convenience. Start the reminder process immediately and increase the frequency of communication as the submission deadline approaches. Teach NYS has also created a PNI reminder flyer that you can distribute and use at your convenience. - Host an Informational Session
Organize an in-person informational session to explain the purpose of the form, how to complete it, and educate the parents on the consequences of missing the deadline. Have staff available, along with students’ DOE ID numbers, to help facilitate the process of parents signing the form. - Set an Internal Early Deadline
Establish a school-specific deadline at least 15 days before the June 1st deadline to allow time to follow up with families who haven’t submitted the PNI. - Track Submissions
Designate a school representative to maintain a checklist or spreadsheet tracking which families have submitted the PNI form. Follow up directly with those who have not yet completed it.
Please take action now to ensure that all students receive the mandated services they are entitled to under their IESP.
