Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes (SCAHC) And Other Grants

Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes (SCAHC)

In response to a myriad of threats and the growing need for enhanced security, schools and shuls have come to rely on the NYS Security Communities Against Hate Crimes grant to help with expanded costs. Under Governor Hochul, this program has expanded to $35m/year over the last 3 budget years. With a $70m grant release every other year, the governor has expanded the size of the grants, and created a longer window for organizations to prepare for the application process. The most recent grant application was released in April and was due in early July.

Following a much-welcomed quick turnaround of grant application reviews by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), applicants for the SFY2026-27 SCAHC grant were recently notified of their awards. Nearly 300 applicants received funding for $250,000 to cover security equipment, training, and cybersecurity expenses.

Grantees will have a two-year period to spend their requested security expenses, beginning on January 1, 2027. Grant details are currently being emailed to recipients by their assigned representatives.

Key Takeaway

According to the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), 765 applications were submitted, requesting a total of $178 million in funding. Notably, 284 applicants automatically failed the first round of reviews due to incomplete or missing information.

To prevent this, it is critical to ensure that your grant applications are complete- including NY prequalification and all supporting documentation. Starting your application preparations early is essential so that you are ready when the next grant period opens. Our security grants division, Project Protect, can guide you through every step of the application process.

Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP)

The FY2026 federal NSGP was released in early July with a tight, nearly two-week application window, leaving many organizations without enough time to apply. Because the application requirements generally remain similar from year to year, our team can work with you now to prepare your submission well before the next grant release.
