Last month, Teach NYS had the privilege of hosting an impactful event aimed at strengthening the support network for special ed coordinators in New York City. A select group of student service coordinators and parent navigators, representing a diverse range of member schools, gathered to collaborate on creating and enhancing a key resource: a Special Education Guide for Parents. This upcoming guide is designed to be a roadmap, as well as a powerful advocacy tool, helping parents navigate the complexities of special education and access vital services as they seek support within NYC’s educational system.
The event offered a valuable opportunity for coordinators to network, share best practices, and gain fresh perspectives on how different schools operate within the framework of special education. The collaborative atmosphere fostered rich exchanges of strategies for effectively communicating with local CSEs, as well as guiding parents through the often-challenging process of securing appropriate services for their children. The discussions were constructive, thoughtful, and centered around the shared goal of creating stronger systems for all students, especially those with unique educational needs.
A highlight of the event was the sensitivity training led by Rebecca Mayer from Yachad. Her session focused on the daily challenges students with disabilities face in schools, offering participants a firsthand understanding of what a child with challenges might experience in an educational setting. This training was not only eye-opening but also empowering, deepening participants’ empathy and motivating them to continue advocating for more inclusive, accessible educational practices.
Looking ahead, the Special Education Guide will be an essential resource for parents, helping them navigate the system, advocate for their children’s needs, and access the support and services they deserve. The guide will be available online on our website as well as in printed form. We are grateful to all the coordinators and navigators who contributed to this inspiring event and look forward to continuing our collaboration to enhance special education services for all students.
Together, we are working to build a more inclusive educational community—one where every child can succeed. Stay tuned for the release of the Special Education Guide in the coming months!
