Expanding the Nevada Educational Choice Scholarship Program

The Nevada Opportunity Scholarship was created in 2015 and provides scholarships for eligible students (those under 300% of the federal poverty line) to attend nonpublic school. Currently, the program is funded at $6.655 million per year – enough for just under 1,500 Nevada students to receive scholarships. These scholarships are essential for families who send their children to nonpublic schools that they otherwise could not afford.

Under the new proposal (Nevada State Assembly Bill 400):

  • The funding cap for the program immediately increases from $6.65 million to $24.6 million (~4,900 students annually)
  • Every two years thereafter, the cap would automatically increase until reaching a final cap of 5% of state education spending (~$246 million annually) in 2032
  • The family income limit would increase from 300% up to 500% of the Federal Poverty Level ($150,000 for a family of four) to also help middle-income families

This year, thanks to leadership in the Nevada state legislature and Governor Lombardo, we are closer than ever to ensuring parents can send their children to the school of their choosing.

Teach NV, in partnership with The American Federation for Children, has already mobilized hundreds of parents and students throughout the state in support of AB400.
